Description: Document lists the eight Japanese United Church congregations in BC, and the clergy who served each of them until 1939 or 1940. Includes Victoria, Cumberland, Steveston, Vancouver, New Westminster, Ocean Falls, Okanagan Valley, and the Fraser Valley. The Fairview Mission was a mission under the Powell Street Church, which supplied leadership.

Curatorial Note:

The term "mission" is normally used for a church body, such as a congregation, that relies on the wider church for financial support and/or human resources. Until the mid-twentieth century, the United Church and its predecessors also used the term to refer to all ethnic or Indigenous church communities. In today's terms, the Vancouver Japanese United Church was fully self-supporting by 1936, so it would probably not fit the definition of a mission, although the Woman's Missionary Society continued to support the congregation's programs.
