Place: Lemon Creek, BC
Curatorial Note:
El Cee Hi refers to Lemon Creek High School, which was formed by the United Church at the internment camp in 1943 because the provincial government would not provide education to the internees beyond elementary school. This 52-page year book was published by the students and produced by the high school Journalism Club. Student Tadaki Oyagi provided the art work. This excerpt gives a flavour for the year book's contents. The year book speaks to the strong spirit of the students in the face of adversity, and among other things, their humour, resourcefulness, and artistry. This particular copy was given to Rev. Takashi Komiyama, who served as a student advisor. Gertrude Hamilton of the Woman's Missionary Society served as principal of the school. Other staff included Mrs. Jean Avis, Mr. K. Ebisuzaki, Mr. Donald Ewing, Miss Helen Hurd, and Mr. John Rowe. Students' written contributions have been withheld from this excerpt, to protect personal information.
