Our Elders Remember

Lorraine West’s family lived in Coquihalla, Brookmere and Vancouver (her father worked for the CPR) before being sent to the Greenwood internment camp during the war. A mostly deserted mining town, Greenwood’s mayor and citizens welcomed the Japanese Canadians for bringing life back to their town. “We went to the Japanese United Church in Greenwood and our whole family was baptized there. The WMS workers looked after us. We had CGIT and Explorers and they took us camping. I remember there were a lot of gifts and care packages sent to us by Vancouver churches.”
