Description: Transcript of an interview with Dr. Percy Bunt, United Church Superintendent of Home Missions for BC Conference from 1939 to 1958. Discussion of the Japanese-Canadian community begins on page 6 of the transcript. Discussion relates to the difference between Christian and non-Christians; mass hysteria during the war; handling of personal property; communities at Greenwood, Grand Forks, Tashme, and Kaslo; the BC Security Commission and the RCMP; and figures such as Rev. Kosaburo Shimizu, Howard Green, and Colonel Mead.
Curatorial Note:
Dr. Percy Bunt was ordained within the Methodist Church in 1920. He served as a pastoral minister in the Methodist Church and United Church (after union in 1925) at Mission and Nanaimo. In 1939, he became Superintendent of Home Missions, staying in that position until his retirement in 1958. As Superintendent, he was a representative of the national Board of Home Missions within BC Conference. The duties included supervision of all aid-receiving missions and pastoral charges in the Conference, and organizing new pastoral charges and mission fields. In British Columbia, there was an emphasis at that time on work with Indigenous congregations, Japanese Canadians, the coastal marine missions, and hospital work.
